Brookdale Tackles Thanksgiving Hunger

By Jason Linetsky

New York Jets rookie Safety Marcus Maye paid a visit to Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center, 1 Brookdale Plaza, on Tuesday, November 21st to provide some holiday happiness to children who will not make it home for Thanksgiving.

Maye joined staff from the Municipal Credit Union, Radio 103.9FM, Make-A-Wish Foundation and Mount Zion Church of God (7th Day) to deliver over 300 turkeys to Community Boards 5, 16 and 17, as well as to State Senators Roxanne Persaud and Kevin Parker, Assemblyman Nick Perry, Assemblywomen Latrice Walker and Tremaine Wright, and Councilwomanelect Alicka Samuel for distribution to their constituent base.

When asked how it felt to be on the Jets and to come to Brookdale, Maye stated, “It feels good to be on the Jets and I’m excited about my first year with the team. I’m also excited about having the chance to help the community and give back to it.”

Maye toured the children’s ward where he brought smiles to the kids. He was also sent back in time to his childhood during a meeting with 8- year-old Indirah Santos.

Santos, who was doing her math homework in the ward’s classroom, sat in deep concentration as Maye tried to help her with multiplication.

“I think you need to carry the one over here,” stated Maye as he pointed to her worksheet and chuckled. “Wow, I haven’t done this math in a long time!”

Once she learned who he was, she perked up and stopped working on her homework. With a big smile, she spoke to Maye as they joked about her love of dance and her attempt to get one of her brothers, also in the room, to dance for the safety.

In each interaction with the kids, Maye brought a bit of joy to their faces as he asked which sports and teams they liked, how they were doing, what they were in Brookdale for and wished them a Happy Thanksgiving.

Following the tour, Maye made his way to the other giveaway sites before he headed back to work, preparing to play in last Sunday’s game versus the Carolina Panthers.
