Mustangs Couldn’t Run From Vikings

By Jason Linetsky

The PSAL City Conference Championships are underway and the 7th-seeded South Shore Educational Campus Vikings have conquered the first round.

The Vikings stepped onto Canarsie Educational Campus’ field, 1600 Rockaway Parkway, on Saturday and dominated the Mustangs of Harry S. Truman High School from the opening whistle.

South Shore tallied 20 points in the first quarter while their defense held the Mustangs to one touchdown. The Vikings went on to score a touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters to pull ahead for good, winning handily 32-14.

Quarterback Hezekiah Watkins led the way for the Vikings with 211 yards passing, including 61-yard and 50-yard bombs to Wide Receiver Sidney Jackson for two touchdowns. Running Back Darius Thompson blasted through the Truman defense, racking up 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He also had possibly the play of the season for PSAL football with an amazing 95-yard kick return for a touchdown.

With the win, the Vikings move on to battle the 2nd-seeded Curtis High School Warriors in the quarterfinals. The game is set for Saturday at noon at Curtis’ field, 105 Hamilton Avenue in Staten Island.
