One Burned In Suspicious Fire

By Jason Linetsky

Fire units from Canarsie, East New York and East Flatbush converged on East 93rd Street and Farragut Road last Thursday to fight a blaze that erupted at a two-story brick home. The fire started around noon and spread throughout the first floor. Firefighters brought the fire under control in under a half hour.

According to Battalion 58 Chief Brian Foley, one woman was taken to a local hospital with burns to her hands and feet. The owner, who was at the scene, remarked about an ongoing landlord-tenant dispute and suspects his tenants may have caused the fire. However, the cause of the fire is still under investigation. No firemen were injured.

From January 1st to September 30th, there were almost 5,800 fires handled by the FDNY across the borough. Within Canarsie, the first floor of a house on East 88th Street near Flatlands Avenue went up in flames on September 28th. In another case, two people, including a firefighter, were injured in a May blaze on East 83rd Street near Avenue L that destroyed the first floor then spread to the second.
