By Linda Steinmuller

Photo by Lloyd Mitchell Photo by Lloyd Mitchell As of last week, the number of murders in New York City totaled 27, according to NYPD statistics. That number is equal to the murders committed during the same period in 2016. A fatal shooting in the 75th Precinct over the weekend brought the city’s murder count to 28.

Police sources said a 41-year-old man was shot in his head in the basement of a home on Alabama Avenue, near Riverdale Avenue, around 4:35 a.m. on Saturday, February 11th. EMS responded and pronounced the man dead at the scene. His name was not released as of press time.

Area residents said this is not the first time there’s been trouble at the location, whose basement had been converted into a bar and lounge, and the venue for an ongoing beef between the two men. “A fight broke out, and the shooting was the end result. The victim tried to punk the other guy, and he paid for it with his life,” one resident told the Canarsie Courier.

There are no arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information regarding this shooting is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or for Spanish 1-888- 57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers Website at www.nypdcrimestoppers.com or texting their tips to 274637 (CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
