Resident “Killed Instantly” After Being Hit By Two Cars
A utility pole at the northwest corner of Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J is adorned with candles, flowers and photos of 81-year-old Luis Ruiz. The Canarsien was struck by two cars last Friday night while he was crossing Rockaway Parkway and Avenue J and, according to officials, died instantly after being hit by the first car. Police are asking for the public’s help in possibly tracking down the driver of the car that fled the scene.
Police said Ruiz was walking westbound on Avenue J and Rockaway Parkway at around 9 p.m. Witnesses at the scene said he was crossing the intersection against the light when a dark sedan, heading north on Rockaway Parkway, hit him, stopped momentarily, and then sped off.
A second car, a green Mitsubishi that was also heading north on Rockaway Parkway, struck Ruiz, but the driver, whose name was not released, remained at the scene and was not charged, police said.
Accident Investigation Unit officers, along with local police, are still investigating another hit-run incident that occurred on August 6th on Flatlands Avenue near East 94th Street.
In that case, a driver attempted to pass a truck parked on Flatlands Aveune. The driver hit the truck and then plowed into a paratransit sedan, injuring the driver. The driver of the hit-and-run vehicle turned north on East 94th Street and fled on foot after parking the car, which was a rental. Witnesses said he was seen trying to remove the car’s license plates. Police are still looking for him.
They ask that anyone who may have information on that incident or may have seen the car that fled the latest hit-and-run scene to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
