Corner of Paerdegat Avenue North and Paerdegat 4 Street has stop signs for westbound and southbound traffic. A 65-year-old Canarsie resident was struck and killed last week as she crossed Paerdegat Avenue North at Paerdegat 4 Street, police said.

A report filed at the 69th Precinct indicates Marie Denise Pierrelus of Paerdegat 6 Street was struck by a 2004 Ford Econoline van shortly before 8 p.m. on Tuesday, September 27th. After the accident she was taken to Brookdale Hospital by Emergency Medical Service ambulance and was pronounced dead by an emergency room physician at 8:25 p.m.

The 57-year-old driver of the van, whose name was not released, told police he was traveling west on Paerdegat 4th Street and stopped at the Paerdegat North intersection. The corner has a stop sign for westbound and southbound traffic lanes and the van driver yielded to another car traveling south on Paerdegat North and then proceeded into the intersection to make a left turn.

The man said it was while he was making the turn that he felt a “thump” and pulled his car to the shoulder of the road. He got out of the car and discovered Ms. Pierrelus body lying in the street.

The driver immediately called 911, identifying himself as the driver, and waited for assistance, meanwhile trying to tend to the person in the road. Paramedics were on the scene within minutes and transferred Ms. Pierrelus to the ambulance, meanwhile performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation on her. They then rushed her to the hospital.

Highway Accident Investigation officers said there were no charges filed against the driver of the van and that he did not appear to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol. They also said there were no mechanical issues with the van and the vehicle was released to the driver.
