What's Your Opinion?

Question: While holding hearings this month, Port Authority officials and workers say that money is desperately needed to fix bridges and tunnels and they are proposing drastic increases in tolls. Do you think this is fair to the general commuter, or is there another solution? Please explain.

“No, it’s definitely not fair. The public has enough problems with the economy as it is. And those problems with Port Authority have been going on for a long time. It’s fundamentally the responsibility of the government to find ways to fix bridges and keep tolls down. Do something like seek private donations and conduct fund raisers.” –Victor Roscoe, East New York “No, it’s definitely not fair. The public has enough problems with the economy as it is. “I think that the Port Authority executives are making too much money. And I don’t know what they are doing with it. That money should be used for bridge maintenance and repair. The public already pays too much.” –Jose Suarez, Williamsburg “I think that the Port Authority executives are making too much money. And I don’t know what they are doing with it. “I think it’s outrageous. That’s too much money. People don’t have the money. They should make the increases slight increases. So people can adjust their incomes.” –Taina Aponte, Canarsie “I think it’s outrageous. That’s too much money. People don’t have the money. They should make the increases slight increases. “There is no end to these increases. They should put a cap on the amount of money they can charge for the tolls. Anytime they want money, they just burden the public with it. I don’t know where the government should get the money from. But it’s up to them and they should be doing a better job.” –Barbara Whitfield, Canarsie “There is no end to these increases.
