MAN SHOT DURING HOME INVASION
A man who was asleep in the basement apartment of a house on East 89th Street early Tuesday, August 16th was abruptly awakened by two men who burst into the room from the community driveway, yelled at him, beat him with their fists and then shot him. The victim, whose name was not released, was shot once in the stomach. Hospital officials said his wound is not life threatening.
A report filed by officials of the 69th Precinct Detective Squad indicated the attack took place at about 2:30 a.m.
The victim said he had been in bed when two men wearing what appeared to be American Flag bandanas across their faces came into the ground-floor bedroom through a back door leading from the driveway and loudly yelled, “Yo! Yo! Yo!” Then they proceeded to slap him across the face multiple times.
A fight ensued, according to the detectives, and eventually one of the attackers took a small silver handgun from his belt and started shooting at the victim, striking him in the chest. The victim told cops he didn’t even realize he had been shot until after the attackers left.
He told police he chased the two men out the door onto the driveway and, before running from the driveway to the street, one of the men took another shot at the victim, which missed.
The two men continued running along East 89th Street. The victim said he didn’t recall what direction they took or whether they escaped by car. When police patrol officers arrived, they tended to the victim and Emergency Medical Service paramedics took him to Brookdale Hospital.
Detectives said the two attackers were identified as black, wearing the flagtype head gear and both in their late 20s. One was said to have “pimpled” skin. Both men were wearing blue baseball hats.
