Parents Trust Raven Learning Center For Children’s Needs

By Dara Mormile

The warm and nurturing environment at Raven Learning Center, 1102 East 92nd Street, is why so many parents in the community trust the private school to take care of and educate their children.

“We provide a homely, clean and caring atmosphere at an affordable price,” said Maria Callender (in top photo, at right) Executive Director of the day care. “A lot of parents enroll their children after hearing great things about us from their friends and family.”

The school was established 16 years ago at East 94th Street and Glenwood Road and started with only three students. As enrollment increased, more space was needed, so the school moved to its present location at East 92nd Street several years later. Now, the school has over 300 students and a staff of 21 attending to classes. Assistant Director Keoneshia Bailey said even though the school presently occupies the building’s first floor and basement, they will probably look for a location in the near future with additional floors to accommodate the growing population of students.

Raven Learning Center offers day care for young children and provides education for grades 1 through 6. The success of the school is attributed to the small size of classes.

“There are 10 students or less in each of our classes so children receive individual attention and do better in their studies,” Callender said. “In fact, most of our students get accepted to gifted middle schools where they continue to excel.”

In addition, the center offers an after school program and summer camp, which provides trips, parties and many educational activities which help children develop. According to parent surveys, the center received high marks in environment, hands-on learning and child motivation.

Callendar also says Raven Learning Center is a model of the quality of education from the Caribbean islands – where children attend the same school from early childhood into adolescence.

“We instill the same values and discipline as teachers from the Caribbean practice – we’re firm and strict with our children but we care about them and make them comfortable at the same time,” she said. “It’s easier for a child to be disciplined when they know they are loved and cared for – and Canarsie parents who are from the islands will feel better knowing we are using the same values they grew up with.”

Callender also said, “All the students and teachers know each other for years, so a genuine caring relationship develops and everyone builds a very strong relationship. That’s the best part of attending the same school throughout their growing years.”

Raven Learning Center’s day care is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. with extended hours available, and their school is open from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Their staff can be reached by calling (718) 927-2316.
