Thanks For The Memory

My name is Kwani B. O’Pharrow, Sr. I am the eldest grandchild of the legendary Jimmy “O”. I am in receipt of your article (View From the Middle, 3/3/10). I’ve read numerous articles on my grandfather over the past few weeks, and I must say that your article was beautifully written.

I am so glad that you had fond memories of my grandfather and were able to share them with your readers. Although I must point out that our gym is located at 1506 Hornell Loop, not on Van Siclen Avenue. Many people mix up our club with the Brooklyn Sports Club. It’s an honest mistake.

In the physical absence of my grandfather, the gym has to be run by myself, Chairman/CEO, my uncle Marc, my uncle Cleavon J. Evans and my brother James O’Pharrow. We were honored to officially take the reigns in November of 2010. We are working extremely hard to preserve the legacy of the late great Jimmy “O”. We have tons of projects in the works, not only dedicated to Jimmy “O”, but projects that help the youth of our community.

One of our biggest projects is the Jimmy “O” Foundation that my grandfather established in 2007, where he gave out boxing scholarships to Golden Glove Fighters who plan to attend college or who are in college continuing their education. We are also planning the Jimmy “O” Foundation Memorial Dinner on Sunday, April 18, 2011. There are movies in the works, and other great things happening.

Hope to hear from you soon. Cheers!

Kwani B. O’Pharrow, Sr.
