NUN’S SEX ASSAULT STORY A HOAX

By Charles Rogers

Officials from NYPD headquarters have confirmed that a nun from a Canadian religious sect housed in East Flatbush last week made up a story that she had been choked into unconsciousness and then sexually assaulted a week ago.

According to Detective John Savatolo, a spokesman for Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the 26-yearold nun, from a convent on Glenwood Road, originally told detectives from the 67th Precinct — and subsequently officials from the NYPD’s Special Victim’s Squad (SVS) — she had been walking on East 40th Street at about 8:30 p.m. on Friday, January 22nd when the man accosted her, grabbing her around the neck, choking her into unconsciousness and sexually assaulting her. She said when she awoke near the convent, she called police and she was then taken to a nearby hospital for examination and treatment. Police said she even described her attacker to a police artist and they released a sketch purported to be his likeness.

Then last Tuesday, the woman recanted her entire story. Officials at the convent told authorities the nun sought counsel from her superiors. Sources indicated she had supposedly had an affair with a neighborhood bodega worker and made up the rape story to cover up the tryst.

The Daily News cited the Christian sect as Apostles of Infinite Love, based in Canada, but the NYPD spokesperson did not confirm it.

The story became of interest here because of a rape that occurred on January 20th on East 96th Street and Avenue M where a 21-year-old woman was victimized. The man also robbed her at the time, stealing her iPod. He was described as black, about six feet, Nun went so far as to describe her “attacker” to police sketch artist for distribution to media. to six feet, two-inches tall and with a slim build. Sixty-ninth Precinct detectives were checking to see if there was a connection between the two until the second case was refuted.

Another Local Molest Case

Another sex-related case in the local area was added this week when a 45-year-old woman walking on Avenue N near East 99th Street last Monday at about 6 a.m. was pushed to the ground by a man who attacked her from behind. When she fell, the man pulled at her clothes and tried to molest her, police said. The woman, a resident of Crown Heights, told authorities the man was wearing a black mask and there were no weapons involved. Police did not say the woman was actually raped.

Anyone with information is asked to call (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
