It was a big hit, according to the many fans of the Daily News Golden Gloves Tourney last Friday night when the rousing fights were held at St. Bernard’s Auditorium.

With Mary Queen of Heaven Pastor Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello assisting ring announcer Sandy Redock, things got off to a fast start and the eight bouts of three rounds each saw fighters using their expertise to advance in the boxing world. Division fighting included boxers from various clubs throughout the city and, although officials didn’t say when or where the next series of bouts would be held, to see the interest shown by local fans, they should be back soon.

Along with the clubs and top-notch fighters, special interest was shown as the referee and Msgr. Jamie introduced professional boxer — North American Boxing Federation (NABF ) Featherweight Champion Maureen Shea — to the crowd. Shea is not only president of Global Boxing, but she trained Academy Award-winning actress Hillary Swank in the movie “Million Dollar Baby.”
