Charles Rogers After police from the 69th Precinct responded to a call that an assault was taking place at the Belt Parkway construction site at about 3:30 p.m. last Friday, they raced to the area and found that a man had not only struck one of the Department of Transportation workers but had stolen some of the construction materials. The thief escaped after the incident.

Witnesses said the man brazenly drove up to the roadway entrance on the east side of the Rockaway Parkway traffic circle where workers’ cars and construction material, along with makeshift office trailers, are stored. He was stopped by the mail victim, but pushed him aside, according to witnesses, striking the worker in the arm. The man then grabbed some boards, ran to his car, threw the materials in the back seat of his car and drove off north on Rockaway Parkway.

Emergency Medical Service paramedics treated the worker. Police said his injuries appeared to be minor.
