The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful, and, as a result, you could hear Brooklyn Cyclones fans all over the place telling each other, “What a great day for a baseball game!”

Of course, the fact that it was last Friday, the day before Father’s Day, made it more than something special for the Cyclones’ Opening Day — especially because they were facing the Staten Island Yankees.

Throwing out the ball for the first day of play at the MCU Park at Coney Island was an honor put aside for Brooklyn Borough President to do and Markowitz, in his full Hawaiian shirt, summoned all his strength and got the ball almost over home plate.

But it served the purpose, as the Borough President then did his public relations duty and glad-handed everyone in sight.

Safe At Fist – It’s easy to see how the Cyclone’s won (6-2) with their sharp running and sharper hitting! Of course, former New York Mets star Wally Backman, manager of the Cyclones, was pleased the game turned out to be a winner, as the Yankees were defeated by a score or 9- 6, bringing the home team’s record to 2 - 0.

Backman said he was happy to be able to celebrate the win, especially since it was the tenth anniversary of the team.

After the game, fans were treated to a giant fireworks disply that lit up the Coney Island skyline.
