WOMAN DIES IN BAY VIEW FIRE

Female resident died in her 5th floor Bay View apartment that was completely gutted by fire, Charles Rogers Despite the exhaustive, desperate efforts of her daughter to pull Sandra Lubin from an all-hands fire in her apartment at Bay View Houses last Monday morning, the 43-year-old woman succumbed to the smoke and flames, authorities said.

The daughter, Jessica, frantically tried to get to her mother, who was trapped in the fifth floor apartment at 1630 East 102nd Street, a Fire Department spokesman said. Neighbors said they heard Jessica calling out, “Mom! Mom!” to her mother as the flames pushed her out into the hall.

Fire officials said they received the call at 6:17 a.m. and dispatched at least 60 firefighters and 12 rigs, including those from Canarsie’s Engine 257, Ladder 170 and Battalion 58. The fire was brought under control wihin 30 minutes.

Published sources said that, while the origin of the fire was not determined to be suspicious, it started as a result of a cigarette Lubin had been smoking in bed.

The Fire Department spokesman said there were no other injuries. They said that, other than some smoke and water damage, no other apartments were burned or affected, but Lubin’s home was gutted, with the windows completely blown out.
