Pregnant Woman And Unborn Okay After Shooting
A pregnant woman who was just leaving a house on East 88th Street early Monday morning was shot in the hip by a lone, masked gunman. Two male friends of the woman were also shot and slightly wounded, police said.
Norma Ortega, 23, who is five months pregnant, along with the 24- year-old father of the baby and another man, were departing from a Father's Day party on East 88th Street at about 1:50 a.m. on Monday, June 22 and were waiting for a car service to come and pick them up, when there was a knock on the door and a man wearing a mask and armed with a silver handgun began to shoot at them, police said.
Detectives from the 69th Precinct said as the male victim and his friend began to retreat into the house, the gunman followed them and then turned and fired at the pregnant woman, striking her in the hip. The other two men were also shot, one was grazed on the chin and the upper chest and the other in the right side, with the bullet exiting out his lower back, cops said. All were taken to Brookdale Hospital by Emergency Medical Service ambulance.
Police sources said a number of shell casings were discovered after the shooting, including those from a 9mm automatic, two .45 caliber shell casings and one bullet fragment.
After further investigation and hospital recovery, the pregnant woman's condition — as well as that of her unborn baby — was described as stable.
