Itinerary Set For Monday's Memorial Day Ceremonies
American Legion Canarsie Post 573 will sponsor the local Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 25 and they're asking members of the community to join them in the march and preceding ceremonies to honor those who gave their lives in wars in the defense of freedom.
Carlton Richardson, commander of Post 573, said there will be two military services preceding the parade. At 9 a.m., there will be a short memorial service at the Canarsie Veterans Circle at the foot of Rockaway Parkway. Short speeches by local dignitaries will be given and a wreath will be positioned at the foot of the flagpole.
At 10 a.m. another memorial service will be held at Canarsie Cemetery, at Remsen Avenue and Avenue K, where there is a Civil War monument. Attendees will pay their respects to the fallen soldiers from all wars.
The parade will kick off at 11:30 a.m. at the Legion Hall at East 92nd Street and Conklin Avenue. Marchers will head east on Conklin to Rockaway Parkway, where they will go south to Avenue M, west on Avenue M to East 92nd Street where they will pause at P.S. 115 to honor the deceased soldiers who served in World War I and where there are plaques dedicated to them affixed to a fence.
The marchers will procede north on Remsen Avenue, pause at the cemetery at Avenue K for a moment, and continue back to the Legion Hall where refreshments will be served and the public can go inside and take a look at an artifacts and photo display presented by the Canarsie History Museum.
