A 91-year-old Canarsie resident died last Friday evening as a result of a fire that erupted in her house at about 6 p.m. police and firefighters said. Two firefighters were slightly injured in the blaze that appeared to have originated in an air conditioning unit in a rear bedroom of the house, at 1174 East 95th Street between Avenue J and Flatlands Avenue.

The body of the victim, Eileen Drayton, was found in the living room of the second floor apartment, sources said, noting that her teenage great-grandchildren would normally have occupied the bedroom but they were away for the evening.

Fire Department spokesman Frank Dwyer said the first alarm was sounded at 6 p.m. and rigs from the Rockaway Parkway firehouse, including Engine Co. 257, Ladder Co. 170 and Battalion 58, arrived within minutes to see the side of the house engulfed in flames. The call was raised to an all-hands fire, consisting of 12 units and at least 65 firefighters and it was declared under control at 6:25 p.m.

Firefighters, along with Emergency Medical Service technicians and paramedics performed CPR on Drayton and took her to Brookdale Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dwyer said that, although there appeared to be nothing suspicious, fire marshals are continuing to investigate it because a fatality was involved.
