MAN ROBBED AT ATM ON AVE. L

By Charles Rogers

Washington Mutual Bank at Avenue L and Rockaway Parkway.
Police from the 69th Precinct reported a Canarsie resident was robbed allegedly at gunpoint early last Monday while using a bank's ATM machine.

Officials from the Detective Squad said the robbery occurred in the ATM foyer of the Washington Mutual Bank at 1764 Rockaway Parkway, at the corner of Avenue L, at about 1 a.m. No one was hurt during the robbery, police said.

Detectives said the victim told them he didn't see the other man in the large foyer at first and calmly took his bank card out of his wallet and started to make a transaction when the thief grabbed him from behind, saying he had a gun and to do what he said. He then directed the victim to take out as much cash as he could from the ATM.

The victim handed the robber approximately $400, police said, and the thief fled south on Rockaway Parkway. It's not known whether he escaped in a car or on foot. He was described as black and approximately in his late 20s. Police did not release the name of the victim.

Anyone with information is asked to notify the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 257-6215 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept strictly confidential.
