Miniature Horses Added To Prospect Park Zoo's Menagerie
Zoo-goers will be delighted to see this excellent equine duo settle in to their home on the zoo's pasture, joining other barn area residents, including Aggie the cow and Franklin the turkey. Abe (below left) is a black beauty complete with a long black mane and tail, while Bogie contrasts with a rusty brown coat and blonde hair. Zookeep-ers say the horses, which are both male and hail from the Bronx Zoo, are adjusting well to the new surroundings. The pair mostly munches on hay and enjoys each others' company as they get to know their new digs. While miniature horses are about the size of a small pony, approximately 38 inches from the shoulders, they retain traits that are characteristic of horses, most notably, their body's proportion. Ponies have a more barrel-shaped body with shorter legs. Miniature horses are also known for their friendly demeanor, which zookeepers say couldn't be truer of Abe and Bogie!
Prospect Park Zoo charges a nominal fee, but is free for children under 3. The Prospect Park Zoo is located at 450 Flatbush Avenue. For further information, call 1-718-399-7339 or visit www.prospect-parkzoo.com.
