Bildersee Students Tackle Justice With 2nd Mock Trial Session

Students with Mr. O'Mara, and Kin Ng.
Hear ye! Hear ye! Court was in session when students at Isaac Bildersee I.S. 68 participated in the second annual mock trial on June 4. Two sixth grade classes - 161 and 164 - competed to establish which group was more proficient in presenting a mock trial. The premise this year was a defendant charged with first degree robbery and criminal possession in the first degree.

Assistant Principal Ikhlas Abdullah said, "Speaking for myself and our principal, we greatly appreciate the hard work of the District Attorney's office who have worked diligently with our students."

According to school officials, Assistant District Attorney John O'Mara has visited the school on numerous occasions to help the students develop a greater understanding of legal issues and court cases. In addition, Assistant District Attorney Kin Ng was present to judge the proceedings and also gave the pointers to the students after the competition was completed.

The court proceedings included prosecutors and defense attorneys questioning witnesses such as police officers and the victim of the crime. The jury was charged with the responsibility of deliberating on the evidence and returning with a decision. The suspect was eventually found guilty and taken away by the court bailiff. The Academy of Entrepreneurship and Law at the East 82nd Street school has collaborated with the officials at the Brooklyn DA's Office to develop this unique program that assists students in obtaining an understanding of our legal system.

Anita Thorpe, the Coordinator of the 'Legal Lives' Program at the Brooklyn DA's office said, "Both classes performed on a very high level and at this time, the scoring is very close. In my opinion, both classes are big winners!"

Principal Alex Fralin commented, "Under the leadership of Assistant Principal Abdullah and teachers, Ms. Sadowski and Ms. White, this annual event has set the bar high for our academy themes. We cannot say enough thank you's to Ms. Anita Thorpe and ADA John O'Mara from the District Attorney's office."
