Traditional Sounds Ring Out At Gospel 'Explosion'

Who said doo-wop was dead? It definitely made a comeback last Saturday as the United House of Prayer For All People in Jamaica, Queens hosted a Gospel Explosion concert that brought together some of the most loved traditional groups in the gospel community.

Coming from as far as Alabama were Johnny Peoples and the Gospel Crowns. The Great Wind Sounds of Trumpets of New Britain, CT and the Pittman Harmonica Gospel of Philadelphia, PA were among the greats who packed the sanctuary to a standing room only crowd.

The audience was also entertained by many well-known local acts, such as Catherine Miller (pictured above), Billy Walker and the All-Stars and The Joy Wonders.

Singing songs of hope, faith, and happiness were thematic in the performances, accompanied by smooth rhythms of horns, bass guitars and a traditional Southern gospel sound. Young children in the audience were introduced to music long before their time, but that resonated just as well with them as with the parents and grandparents who had them tag along.
