A teenager on her way to her Sunset Park home after shopping at Kings Plaza with three friends was struck and killed Friday as she tried to cross Avenue U, police said.

NYPD Highway Patrol officers told reporters that Brunida Santiago, 17, had just been shopping with her three friends - a 21-year-old man, his wife and a teenage girl - and were headed to the friend's Marine Park home when they apparently attempted to cross Avenue U at East 34th Street just as a 2008 Mazda heading west on Avenue U swerved so he would not hit Santiago's friends, instead hitting her.

Witnesses told reporters that it appeared all four tried to dart across the street in front of the car before it came upon them. Investigators said later that it appeared they simply failed to cross the street quickly enough.

Police said that apparently Santiago died immediately as a result of the crash. Her friends were not hurt. The 59-year-old female driver of the Mazda, whose name was not released, was not charged in the accident. Charles Rogers
