Fast and intense police work led to the arrest of a suspect in the stabbing of an off-duty police officer last week during a dispute on Avenue L.

Police sources at the 69th Precinct said the victim, a Canarsie resident whose name was not released, had been hospitalized after he became embroiled in an argument with George Barrett, 44, over a parking place on Avenue L between Remsen Avenue and East 91st Street at about 5:15 p.m. on April 23.

They were both heading to a parking space on the westbound side of Avenue L near Remsen Avenue and the argument centered on who got there first, according to police.

As the dispute continued, Barrett allegedly reached for a knife and slashed the police officer on the arm then fled on foot. Neighborhood residents who heard the commotion called for emergency services. Paramedics arrived transported the injured offier to Kings County Hospital where he was treated and eventually released with several stitches in his right arm.

Emergency Services Unit officers were called to the scene and used a K-9 Unit dog to assist in trying to track down the suspect at the time, but he had apparently escaped from the area. Barrett was later picked up at his home and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
