Volunteers Make A Clean Sweep At Plumb Beach

An estimated 150 volunteers participated in last Saturday's cleanup and restoration at Plumb Beach, just a few miles southwest of Canarsie along the Belt Parkway.

A day earlier nearly two dozen people began the work of clearing debris and planting flora along the one-mile stretch of beach that is part of Jamaica Bay.

The event, coordinated by the Ameri-can Littoral Society, was in conjunction with Earth Day (April 22) and Arbor Day (April 25). Last spring the ALS removed over seven dumpsters worth of garbage from the arena and planted over 1,000 species of native plants. ALS Northeast Chapter spokes-person Don Riepe estimated last week's cleanup was enough to fill two dumpsters and said he appreciated the work of the volunteers from several public and private organizations, including the city's Parks Department, as well as the eco-friendly Sierra and Audubon clubs, and the Sebago Canoe & Kayak Club from Canarsie.
