A few days ahead of Tuesday's 38th Earth Day celebration across the country, Millennium Develop-ment Corporation organized an event that teamed members of the Marine Park Active Adult Program with elementary school students from Public School 207 to plant carnations and other types of flora around the Salt Marsh Nature Center on Avenue U.
The intergenerational event had the students help over a dozen seniors with green thumbs plant several varieties of flowers that will beautify the center's garden across from Marine Park.
"It's extremely satisfying to provide an opportunity to our active adult members to get involved with youths from the community," said Joe Bernardo, director of the Marine Park Active Adults Program.
"The project helps teach students to be mindful of the environment," he added, "while they get a chance to mingle and learn from the older generation."

Another Earth Day event was hosted by the Urban Park Rangers in Marine Park on Sunday that included a demonstration of pet micro-chipping by the North Shore Animal League, which also offered pets for adoption.
