Cop Of The Month Awarded; Quality Of Life Issues Addressed

While the 69th Precinct honored its officers and administrative staff last Thursday during Medal Day, Commanding Officer Captain Ralph Monteforte continued the award process by naming Sergeant Brandon Bersch as Cop of the Month during Tuesday's meeting of the Community Council.

Bersch was on patrol on March 12 when a youth was robbed at gunpoint at East 94th Street and Glenwood Road. Three suspects, who Monteforte said do not reside in Canarsie, got out of their car and stole the victim's cell phone and fled in an unknown direction. The victim called 911 and Bersch, along with other officers, took a description of the suspects and the direction they fled. The officers tracked the suspects and spied them on Kings Highway near Remsen Avenue, where they were apprehended. They were taken to the Foster Avenue station house and all three were arrested. Two of the three had prior records. The name and age of the victim was not revealed.

At the meeting, which took place at the Hebrew Educational Society, Monteforte also took time to address various concerns about quality of life issues.

A few residents complained of suspicious activities in community driveways. One woman was concerned about a mysterious car parked near her driveway at about three in the morning. Repeated calls to the precinct did not resolve the issue, she said.

The captain promised to look into the matter, but, he said, "We really can't do anything because it's considered private property and you might have half a dozen families using that driveway," he said. "We would have to go to every person on the block and ask them if they allowed that vehicle to be in their driveway. But we can still look into it in case there is illegal activity taking place or they're committing a crime."

Brooklyn District Attorney social workers spoke about a new program, the Mothers Against Gangs Task Force.

"It's important to know the signs your children may be involved with gangs. We want to educate mothers on prevention methods as well as offer insight on the culture of gangs," said Judith Destin.

She said her office will host a meeting this Saturday from 1-3 p.m. at the District Attorney's central office, 350 Jay Street in Downtown Brooklyn.
