You Must File Tax Return To Get 'Stimulus' Rebate Assemblyman Alan Maisel (D-59th AD) this week issued a reminder to his constituents and other Brooklyn residents they must file a 2007 federal income tax return in order to qualify for the economic stimulus payment, even if they are not normally required to file one. The stimulus payments will be is-sued to more than 130 million households starting in May - but only to filers. "For those who annually file a tax return, it's not a problem," Assembly-man Maisel said. "But it's an issue for some seniors receiving Social Security benefits and others who don't usually file tax returns, or haven't in a very long time. If they don't file a tax return this year, they won't receive their check." Certain Social Security recipients, railroad retirees, those receiving benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, and taxpayers with income be-low a certain level are ordinarily exempt from filing a tax return. How-ever, those with at least $3,000 of qual-ifying income who file may be eligible for a $300 payment ($600 on a joint return). The economic stimulus payment pro-gram is part of a $150 billion plan to combat a faltering economy. In addition to the rebates, the plan provides for more than $40 billion in business tax breaks and increased home loan allowances, a move Washington hopes will lend support to the mortgage market. "The stimulus payment is only go-ing to those who file a tax return. Un-fortunately, it's not automatic, so I want to make sure all eligible New Yorkers get back the money that's been set aside for them," Assemblyman Maisel said.
