Officials started a program in 1980 called "Shabbat Across America," where they would be welcomed with a dinner and enjoy a "taste of shabbat," with the hope that unaffiliated young people in Jewish communities in the U.S. and Canada would feel welcome and join in future prayer services. Since then, the program has evolved into an annual event nationwide, with radio and television commercials heralding the arrival of the day.
Last Friday evening, Temple Emanu-El of Canarsie successfully hosted their seventh annual program, presenting a beautiful prayer service and delicious dinner hosted by Rabbi Joseph Minkin and his family, Cantor Doris Cohen, Synagogue President Leonard Strum and his wife, Marilyn, who was the committee chairperson for the dinner.
