Local Pols React To N.Y. Governor's Scandal
In the wake of Spitzer's one-min-ute apology when he said he "acted in a way that violates my obligations to my family and violates my, or any, sense of right and wrong…," a few local politicians chose their words care-fully. Democratic State Assemblyman Alan Maisel, who represents the 59th A.D., which encompasses parts of Canarsie, Mill Basin, Bergen Beach and the surrounding communities, said, "This is a tragedy for the Spitzer family, as well as New York State. To have this occur at this particular time, when the Legislature is involved in crucial budget negotiations is a needless distraction that compounds the personal tragedy." Former Surrogate Court Judge Frank Seddio, a community activist and pun-dit who held the Assembly seat before Maisel and has been involved as a major political force here for years, al-so said he was "saddened" by the situation.
Seddio said he had a great deal of admiration for David Paterson, who will succeed Spitzer, as of Monday. "Paterson is a fabulous guy," he said. "This is the kind of person who knows government from start to finish. He not only knows his way around politics, but he can rise to the occasion no matter what comes up." State Senator John Sampson said his prayers go out to the governor and his family at this "very difficult time." "Now is the time that we will all work to restore the public's faith and trust in New York's government," he said. "Now is when we must focus on the extremely important budget and the tasks ahead."
