Holy Family Hosts Mortgage Crisis Workshop

Two weeks ago, elected officials joined with several churches to offer free mortgage workshops so those residents facing foreclosure or some other devastating economic problem might get some help.

The latest workshop, which took place Sunday at Canarsie's Holy Family Church, addressed the question: How Does the Mortgage Crisis Affect You and Your Neighborhood?

Organized by Catholic Charities and featuring speakers from various groups, participants received a few tips on how to refinance and find the best loans, as well as hints on reaching agreements with lenders.

Catholic Charities officials said that, although the workshops are held in churches, you don't have to go to church to get help. They have programs going so that, along with ACORN - Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now - they are reaching out to the entire community. Elected officials from the local community praised the churches for their contributions and for recommending local non-profit agencies to also help out.

As residents look over materials, Karla Alvarado, project coordinator from Catholic Charities Housing Crisis Program, gives them some pertinent advice.
Holy Family held two sessions Sunday: One conducted in Creole and the other in English. The next session will be on April 6 at St. Therese of Lisieux on Troy Avenue. Call (718) 451-1500 for information.
