Area Accidents Leave Cop Critical, 2 Injured
A crash that occurred on Thursday morning on Flatlands Avenue between East 83rd and East 84th streets left an NYPD sergeant critically injured when a large carting truck slammed into her Chevrolet Cavalier sedan. Police said the victim, Sgt. Cherrice Blount, 39, is assigned to a housing unit in Manhattan and was on her way to a firing range from her Canarsie home for "routine" training. Witnesses told police Blount was backing out of the Dunkin' Donuts shop on Flatlands Avenue at about 6 a.m. when the truck - which is used for transporting large garbage or cargo containers - collided with her vehicle. The truck is owned by Regency Recycling Corp. of Rosedale, Queens, police said. Its driver, who was slightly injured, told reporters he tried to avoid hitting the car but swerved and struck the left side of the vehicle, crushing Sgt. Blount.
Firefighters from Engine 257 and Ladder 170, who were on the scene within minutes after the crash, told the Canarsie Courier that the victim was unconscious when they got to her. They had to nearly rip the door off to be able to get her out of the front seat. Blount was rushed by Emergency Medical Service ambulance to Brook-dale Hospital where she underwent sur-gery and, according to officials, was placed in a medically induced coma, which she came out of Tuesday. A hospital spokesperson said there were "scores" of people on hand - friends, police officials and fellow of-ficers - to show support for the well-liked sergeant. Blount, a single mother of a young daughter, had just received a promotion to her present rank.
Two Injured In Crash At Remsen Ave./Ave. N By Neil S. Friedman Two people were injured last Thursday morning in a multi-vehicle crash that left car parts, glass and debris scattered at the intersection of Remsen Avenue and Avenue N. An infant in a car safety seat in the back seat of one vehicle was unharmed, but the child's mother, who was at the wheel, was placed in an ambulance on a stretcher and taken to a nearby hospital. According to an NYPD Accident Report filed at the 69th Precinct, the driver of a 2003 four-door Nissan sedan, heading south on Remsen, was drinking a cup of cappuccino when he ran a red light and collided with a 2006 four-door Ranger Rover Land Cruiser going east on Ave. N. After hitting the Rover, the report said the impact caused the Nissan to collide with a 2002 Toyota Sequoia stopped for the red light in the left northbound lane. A passenger in the Nissan sustained a non-life threatening injury and was taken to a local hospital for observation. The driver was not hurt. The drivers of the Range Rover and Nissan are both Canarsie residents. The injured woman is from Queens.
