69th Precinct Honors Newest Cops Of the Month

After a two-month hiatus, the 69th Precinct Community Council held its first monthly meeting of 2008. Commanding Officer Captain Ralph Monteforte presented several awards to outstanding police officers who have made arrests that led to taking a number of firearms and drugs off the streets since December.

Police Officer Emad Badir was awarded for making arrests of suspects after he responded to a December burglary at East 105th Street. Badir pulled over a van, which fit the description of the vehicle that fled the scene, with the five alleged criminals inside it.

Officers with the Anti-Crime Unit (pictured below) were also honored for arrests made last month.

"This team of officers patrols the community specifically looking for suspicious activity. Their eyes are all over the place and their arrests aren't results of 911 calls," Monteforte said. "The three officers noticed someone coming out of a backyard, who appeared suspicious and armed with a firearm coming out of his waistband."

While patrolling at the Breukelen Houses, police officers Paul O'Connor and Bogdan Tabor (below) were randomly going in and out of the buildings when, according to Monteforte, they came across five or six suspicious individuals who were "just hanging out by the window smoking marijuana in one of the hallways." As the officers approached them, a gun fell to the ground. The officers quickly realized the weapon was fake, but after a small struggle with some of them, they found one suspect with a .40-caliber automatic.

On night patrol on January 9th, officer Lieutenant Mike Looney (below) responded to a robbery "involving a shotgun" at East 100th Street and Avenue M. Looney subsequently spotted a man fitting the suspect's description and chased him over three fences and into a nearby house. Two other officers arrived and with Looney they entered the house, arrested the suspect and recovered the firearm.
