NYPD Commemorates Black History Month

The New York City Police Department and NYPD Guardians Association, the fraternal organization of African-American police officers, celebrated Black History Month at police headquarters last Thursday. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and Community Affairs Chief Douglas Zeigler hosted the event, which was attended by approximately 500 people including uniformed and civilian members of the department and various community leaders. Reverend A.R. Bernard, Sr., is the founding pastor and CEO of the Christian Cultural Center on Flatlands Avenue just east of Canarsie, served as keynote speaker. This year's celebration was themed "promoting public safety through diversity," and featured dance and musical performances, in addition to remarks by Pastor Bernard and others. The Police Department is 16.4 percent black, 25 percent Hispanic and 4.2 percent Asian uniformed personnel. (Above) Left to right: Chief Zeigler, Rev.
