Cops Seek Person Who Took Potshots At Pit Bull

Detectives and uniformed officers check spent shells on E. 98th Street. Charles Rogers
There are those who love dogs; those who tolerate dogs; and those who, by their actions, if nothing else, hate dogs.

Police from the 69th Precinct were confronted with a case of the last of those three choices Thursday when they answered a call of "shots fired" to find a trail of spent bullet shells where a man had fired at a pit bull as he chased the dog for half a block.

In order to calm you dog lovers - and even those who just tolerate them - the dog was not hit and is safe back at home with his best friends.

Neighbors of the East 98th Street resident who owns the dog, said they heard the shots and came running to see what the commotion was at about 1 p.m. and saw the pit bull, who is usually "very friendly," running down the middle of the street towards Avenue N with this stranger apparently chasing the canine and firing his weapon.

The dog turned away from East 98th Street - neighbors said they weren't sure which way he went - and the man with the gun just continued to run south towards Seaview Avenue.

Police, who had been called as soon as the first shots were fired, went after the man but he had already disappeared.

Detectives and uniformed officers canvassed a wide area of the street and discovered at least five spent shells from a .45 caliber automatic lying on the street and in yards. The owner of the pit bull, whose name was withheld, searched for the dog that day and thought he had disappeared, but local detectives said the dog came home the next day.

Anyone who has information on the case is asked to call the 69th Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 257-6215. All calls will be kept strictly confidential. Charles Rogers
