P.S./I.S. 66 held a very special parent workshop last Thursday as part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's Caring Across Comm-unities grant. P.S./I.S. 66 has partnered with The NYU Child Study Center and The Family Life Development Center to offer the ParentCorps program, a collaborative endeavor that provides training and support for school professionals, as well as parents and their young children, in mental health prevention and intervention services.

The goal of the program is to discover ways in which schools and parents can help young children succeed in school and develop important behavioral, social and emotional skills so that students achieve academically to their potential.

"We are committed to a comprehensive early childhood education experience, one in which all developmental aspects of students are addressed, and also allows for parental partnerships and interaction," said Principal Joel Rubenfeld.

P.S./I.S. 66 was specially chosen to offer the ParentCorps after-school program for Pre-K families. Additionally, ParentCorps includes professional development for Pre-K and kindergarten teachers, educational assistants, guidance counselors, social workers, parent coordinators and family workers.

This year ParentCorps is expanding the program to offer the Bridges Program, specifically designed for the first grade.

"Parent participation and support in our Bridges Program has been wonderful. Our parent workshops focus on building a greater understanding and appreciation of our community's many diverse cultural and ethnic identities," said Judith Rapley, the program's community liaison.

Ann Lee Bell, whose daughter is a first grader, has attended the workshops and says she enjoys the monthly meetings because they've been very informative and interesting.

"By participating in the Bridges Program, I have been able impress upon my daughter the importance of not only learning about her culture and ethnicity , but I've been able to share with her the life experiences of the other parents and their children in the program," Bell said.
