Local Students Help Select Offical State Butterfly
New York State Assemblyman Alan Maisel announced the results of a statewide election last week. The winner is the Red Spotted Purple/White Admiral Butterfly (pictured) with 12,461 votes. Following closely behind is the Karner Blue, which garnered 11,489 votes. The other nominees received far fewer votes. Maisel and his colleagues will introduce Legislation to officially designate The Red Spotted Purple/White Admiral as New York's official butterfly. The Brooklyn Assemblyman pointed out that the effort to name a state Butterfly was a great educational opportunity for the students of his district and the state. "Not only were they given a chance to participate in an election, but they also organized campaigns to support their favorite candidate," he said. In addition, they will learn about how a bill becomes a law and about New York's fauna, habitats and conservation of species. Nearly 2,000 students from ten public and parochial schools (list follows) in Maisel's district participated. The parachoial schools were: Holy Family, Mary Queen of Heaven, Our Lady of Miracles and Saint Bernard; the public schools were: P.S. 203, P.S. 207, P.S. 222, P.S. 236, P.S. 277 and P.S. 312.
