New Officers Elected, Issues Discussed At C.B. 18 Meeting
By Skye Holly

Election of new officers was held at last week's Community Board 18 meeting in the Kings Plaza community room.

In this season of presidential campaigning, the mood was relatively light-hearted, but focused in comparison.

State Assembly Member Helene Weinstein commented. "I liked the efficiency of your election," as the concerns of the community were addressed.

Pressing issues discussed reflected the passions of the community. Of continued interest is the proposal for the waste transfer point at Farragut Road and East 100th Street. Opponents rallied at the site last week (see January 17 edition) to voice their dissatisfaction and outrage with the plan.

Guest speaker Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum noted the development of academic papers now examining school governance. While the key concern for many parents is the lack of or removal of the gifted and talented programs, it was understood that only through community involvement could this situation be rectified.

A board member pointed out that if the local leaders met with parents and staff, not just with principals or the Department of Education, there would be more of an awareness by the families that are directly affected by the decisions and changes made to their area's schools. "I'll tell you (that's when) you'll correct your system," she said.

District Manager Dorothy Turano commented on the "Cease and Desist" zones and "the unscrupulous real estate brokers who have harassed homeowners."

A hearing is scheduled at Canarsie High School at 7 p.m. on February 5, 2008 with a list of areas that brokers have been trying to persuade homeowners to sell out of.

Along with the educational issues and waste transfer site frustration, the roomful of local residents seemed to indicate that they would take on a more active role to protect and preserve their quality of life.
