Spring Groundbreaking For Marine Park Senior Center
By Neil S. Friedman

Several local elected officials, whose districts encompass Marine Park, announced last week that a contract has been awarded for the construction of the community's long-anticipated senior center, which could open by the fall of 2009.

The multimillion-dollar facility, according to city Parks Department spokesperson Phil Abramson, will be multifaceted with a senior center to house the thriving Marine Park Active Adults program, and will also serve as a community center and a Parks Department field house. The current field house and rest rooms will be demolished and replaced with a state-of-the-art, ecologically "green" and environmentally friendly building, with new public rest rooms. Ground breaking is scheduled this spring.

Funding for the project was a collaborative effort with Mayor Bloomberg providing $3.5 million at the request of the City Council; Councilman Lew Fidler secured $1.4 million, an additional $1.1 million was obtained by State Senator Marty Golden, $500,000 from Assemblyman Alan Maisel and another $30,000 from Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein.

In announcing the news, Fidler stated, "I am thrilled to learn that this project is finally moving forward. Our seniors and Marine Park goers have deserved a state-of-the-art facility for a long time. I look forward to the groundbreaking, and a subsequent ribbon cutting honoring Carmine Carro shortly thereafter."

The new building will be named for Carro, sometimes called the mayor of Marine Park, a dogged 40-year community activist who died three years ago. He also initiated and organized the annual Marine Park Halloween walk, which, over the years, has been attended by thousands of local residents.

"The seniors of Marine Park deserve this opportunity that will greatly enhance their quality of life," Golden said. "The new center will allow our seniors to age with dignity."

"I am very gratified that this very long process leading up to the construction of the Marine Park Senior Center has finally been successful. I'm pleased that, due to the cooperation of my colleagues in government, the Marine Park Civic and community leaders, it will finally lead to the construction of this badly needed center," Maisel added.

"I wish to thank my colleagues for working to make this possible. And I especially want to thank Mayor Bloomberg and the Parks Department for their critical support," added Fidler.
