View From The Middle
"Wow," everyone said. "I knew it. That's why I voted for him. He's the best!" Well, have we learned lesson here kiddies? Whatever happened to the expression that tells us how we shouldn't judge a book? The guy went into office with a 70 percent-plus plurality and, one year later, his following has fallen almost 40 percent. In case you wondered, that's not too good. A year ago, between the time he won the election and when he was sworn into office, Spitzer was "king of the world." He could have asked for anything and, with the exception of a few hard-headed legislators (Senate Republican leader Joseph Bruno and Assembly Democrat Speaker Sheldon Silver) and gotten it on a silver (pardon the pun) platter. When you've got close to two thirds of the majority vote, it's a given that that's the way things are in state government. Other state governments are just about the same. But Mr. Spitzer instead got a bad case of big head syndrome, and actually thought he was all-of-a-sudden king of the world, noting to one Republican leader who contested him that he'd better get off the (expletive) road because he is a steamroller and would squash anyone in his way! This, too, is not too good. Mark Mr. Spitzer down a few notches in the ratings. The king thing was exemplified as his alleged disdain for Senator Bruno showed its head when he allegedly had the Senate leader tailed when Bruno allegedly took a helicopter - on government expense - to toodle around the state on some allegedly personal business - allegedly (Ya can't be too careful nowadays). Bruno said he did nothing wrong and Spitzer said he did. Either way, it looked like Spitzer was using state police to do the investigating. That tiny incident is still up in the air and being investigated, allegedly by the FBI. Spitzer's rating dropped a few more points by this time. Meanwhile, Speaker Silver appeared to be shuffling papers and setting up legislation and doing, well, Governor-type things, which also inflamed Spitzer because he felt it made people think Silver's calling the shots in Albany (as if he and Bruno hadn't been for years). This made Bruno pretty mad too. So much so, that he called Silver a "wimp" in public. It's not too good when your two top legislative leaders fight in public...not too good at all. Spitzer and Co. are now denying reports that evidence in the choppergate scandal that might have been encoded on Capitol computers had been erased or deleted. How do you like that? In case you're wondering, pundits (whoever they are) are calling this fiasco either the "choppergate scandal" or the "dirty tricks scandal." Check Spitzer's not-too-good rating: Down a few more points. Then came the immigrant driver's license debacle. Spitzer thought he had a helluva good idea: The government will make illegal immigrants obtain driver's licenses. That way we can check how many there are and also make them pay attention to traffic laws. They must also look both ways when crossing a street and also they will get an ice cream cone if they do good and if they do bad they'll have to stand in a corner and also.... That didn't come out too good either - maybe worst of all. Put Spitzer down as a loser in the polls, with people admitting that if he was running for election now, they'd sooner move to another state than vote for him. All-in-all, our governor - the one with the big head who is going to "steamroller" over people in order to get his way - has turned out to be, so far, worse than former Governor George Pataki. You remember him, don't you? He's the one who....the one who....Let's see...the one who... Ho-hum. It's back to New York State government - business as usual.
