Letters To the Editor Maybe Prayer Will Help Editor: I was greatly saddened by the recent assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. A life of love, hope and vision, a path to prosperity for the Pakistani people, cut short. Why would such a group of people engineer such a thing? I had the opportunity to meet Ms. Bhutto when I was a freshman at Harvard College in the spring of 1973 and was impressed by her friendly, congenial demeanor. We used to sit together in the front row of an Afro American Studies course. Later, Ms. Bhutto had to endure the hanging of her father and the murder of her brother, who was in my graduating class at Harvard. So when news came of the assassination, I kneeled down and prayed. As a church deacon, I brought up the matter to our congregation. The pastor was so troubled by the news that she couldn't watch news events about it and said God needed another angel. No doubt al Qaeda and Taliban fighters believe that brave men and women carry out such acts of monstrous violence. Prayer will eventually reach these people. I have faith that guns, knives and nuclear weapons cannot do what the power of prayer can do - convince al Qaeda and the Taliban that they made a mistake. Ms. Bhutto was on a mission of success for all Pakistani people, a mission that others will follow ever more powerfully buttressed by prayer. William E. O'Neill Manhattan
