What's Your Opinion?

Question: Recent report cards for the city's public schools showed that many are making substantial progress due to changes made since the mayor assumed responsibility. Do you think public schools should remain under control of the mayor? Why or why not?

"No, I don't think the mayor should have control. It should be the Board of Education. Kids today need more attention than the mayor can give them. I have a three year old son and I wouldn't want the mayor to dictate education to my son." - Barnett Chislum, Canarsie
"The mayor should be in charge, because he has control of the whole city. He has say over the budget and the economy - and can make sure children have all the books and supplies they need." - Laronda Powell, Canarsie
"The mayor has to have some kind of control. And they proved that grades went up. So yes, I do think the mayor should be in control." - Martin Cruz, Canarsie
"Educators should be in charge. Why should the mayor? The mayor should supply funds and leave the education to the educators." - Maria Alick, Canarsie
