MAN SLAIN ON EAST 93rd STREET

Detectives from the 69th Precinct are investigating who shot and killed 28-year-old construction worker Barry Haynes in the basement apartment, below his mother's day care center on East 93rd Street last Friday morning.

According to the investigators, witnesses told them they heard several shots before they saw two males running from the back of the house, just off of Avenue K. However, no eyewitnesses gave police an accurate description of the suspects. Plainclothes and uniformed police officers canvassed the area for several hours after the 11 a.m. incident and could still be seen there when sunset fell. When neighbors were asked if they had heard anything, some only reported hearing gun shots.

Detectives have not yet determined an apparent motive for the slaying, but since there was no sign of forced entry, they think Haynes may have known his killers. Officials in the case have been questioning Haynes' friends since the incident.

Photos by Neil S. Friedman and Dara Mormile Officials said Haynes, who was born in Trinidad and reportedly living in Canarsie for the past three years, was an unemployed welder and, at the time of the shooting, believe he was staying in the basement of the three-family home.

Police said none of the children in the day care were hurt and some of them could be seen inside the day care center hours after the shooting, running around and playing by reporters on the street. Detectives assured the Courier that the shooting was an isolated incident that had nothing to do with the day care business operated by the victim's mother.
