Student Stabbed To Death Fleeing Gunfire At Party
A 19-year-old student at Manhattan Community College was stabbed to death in East Flatbush early Saturday while fleeing a party on East 57th Street where shots were fired, police said.
According to a spokesperson for NYPD Deputy Commissioner Paul Browne, the victim, Brandon Modeste, 20, had been at a pre-Labor Day party not far from the Glenwood Houses complex, bordering Ralph Avenue, where about 300 people were gathered along the narrow street when several fights broke out, sources said. Shortly after midnight, shots were fired within the crowd, according to published reports, and panicked revelers scattered in all directions.
Modeste fled with many of the frightened party-goers to Flatlands Avenue and then to East 58th Street when he ran into a gang of teenagers who tried to stop him and the others who were fleeing the scene where the gunfire erupted. One of the teens grabbed Modeste and stabbed him multiple times in the torso, leaving the victim bleeding on the street, the spokesperson said. Having been called by neighborhood residents, police arrived moments later.
No one was hurt during the gunfire and the subsequent rampage, police said. Modeste was taken to Brookdale Hospital by Emergency Medical Service ambulance and was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to cops.
Anyone who might have seen the teenage gang or who might have information on the case is asked to call the 63rd Precinct Detective Squad at (718) 258-4401 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
