POLICE PROBE CLUB SHOOTING
Two people were wounded early Saturday after shots were fired outside a social club on Rockaway Parkway. Police from the 69th Precinct said one of the injured men was allegedly shot as a result of an argument with another man inside the club. Published reports indicated the other wounded man might have been shot as he was trying to run away from the shooting scene. Police said they are not yet sure whether it was a police officer who shot the second man or someone else.
Police said the argument broke out inside the club, which is located through a rear entrance to a basement at 1519 Rockaway Parkway, at about 3 a.m. The dispute continued into the back yard and, police said, party-goers scattered when the alleged shooter, Jamel Childs, 18, pulled out a gun and started firing at the man with whom he was arguing, Michael Lewis, 18. Lewis was struck in the right side of his chest and the abdomen.
Although wounded, Lewis ran to the front of the house with the suspect still firing his weapon. Police said a number of bullets struck a parked car and blew out the windows. Lewis jumped into an SUV belonging to a friend who took him to Brookdale Hospital.
Meanwhile, as police arrived, the alleged shooter, along with two other men, tried to escape among the crowd of witnesses who were still scattering in all directions. However, Childs was pointed out by one of the witnesses and police corralled him near the crime scene. A .38 caliber handgun was found in the grass nearby.
Police sources indicated Lewis was last listed in serious condition in the hospital. The second injured man was treated for a wound to his right arm and listed in stable condition. Published reports noted Childs was being charged with attempted murder and assault.
