MORE VIOLENCE AT BREUKELEN
By Charles Rogers
The sprawling Breukelen Houses project covers a wide area located in northeast Canarsie. Charles Rogers Police from the 69th Precinct have arrested a man in connection with a shooting that took place in the Breukelen Houses complex on July 15.
According to detectives, the 22-year-old suspect, whose name was not released, is a resident of the sprawling Breukelen project located between Flatlands Avenue and Stanley Avenue on the north and Williams Avenue and East 103rd Street on the west. In recent weeks, there have been a number of violent incidents - including shootings and drug-related actions - centered in or near the complex, prompting police to concentrate more manpower in the area.
In the recent case, two men were shot as they entered one of the buildings in the complex. The injuries sustained by the victims, whose names were not released, were not life threatening in this case, police said.
Officials from the local detective squad said the two 19-year-old men, one who lives on East 105th Street in the project and the other from East New York, were sitting on a bench near the corner of Glenwood Road shortly after midnight when they decided to go inside.
As they got to the doorway, they heard shots and proceeded upstairs to the apartment belonging to one. It wasn't until they arrived in the apartment that both men realized they'd been shot - one in the thigh and the other in both legs. They called 911 and police, along with other emergency services, arrived. Both victims were taken to Brookdale Hospital by EMS paramedics and both were pronounced in stable condition.
Police, meanwhile, canvassed the area and came up with four spent bullet shells near the scene of the shooting. Witnesses described the shooter to detectives and, as a result of anonymous calls, the suspect was picked up last Monday at his apartment without incident. He was charged with assault. Other charges are pending.
