Howard SteinhartJohn Wilson Class 823 students await next question in last week's opening match of school's Math Challenge. Howard Steinhart In an effort to help students prepare for the crucial upcoming New York State test, the John Wilson Intermediate School 211 Math Department conducted a school-wide Mathematics Challenge last week.

The main goals of the competition, according to principal Buffie Simmons-Peart, was "to raise school spirit regarding mathematics" and help everyone prepare for the approaching state exam.

"The entire Math Department is behind this tremendous effort," she added.

Simmons-Peart singled out Match coach Andre Lawe for scheduling and organizing the event.

Last Friday morning's challenge kicked off a series of games in the school auditorium that will continue as the date for the state tests nears. In the first head-to-head confrontation Class 824 bested Class 823 460-165.

Each match consists of multiple-choice and short answer questions, followed by a lightning round. Point values are given based on the difficulty of the question.
