PS/IS 66 Holiday Concert Warms A Wintry Evening

PS/IS 66 held its annual Winter Concert holiday spectacular last week that featured performances from the school's first ever orchestra, in addition to offerings from its chorus, dancers, drum ensemble and pianists.

Each group spent many hours preparing for this special evening of songs, music and dance that reflect the message of the holiday season.

"Our students have worked very hard the past six weeks, honing their skills in preparation for their performance," said Concert Coordinator Barbara Rudnick.

The grade 5-8 students developed their musical skills when they attended the school's unique four-day-a-week Enrichment Program, and participation in the after-school music program.

Students were encouraged to practice at home with their instruments. "I had never played the clarinet before, and now I enjoy taking the instrument home because I get to practice more and get better at playing the clarinet," said grade six orchestra member Kelsey Jean-Baptiste.

The newly formed PS/IS 66 Orchestra kicked off the entertainment with a winning rendition of "March Majestic," followed by such holiday classics as "Jolly Old St. Nick" and "Jingle Bells."

Another highlight was the dancers, wearing beautiful dance skirts created by parents, who performed "Simple Gifts," by Aaron Copland. The chorus then capped off the magical evening with a round of traditional holiday songs.

"It is crucial that we both develop and nurture the abilities of all students, said PS/IS 66 Principal Joel Rubenfeld. "Our comprehensive arts program enables us to provide students exposure to and experience in the different art forms. Our talented faculty is able to support and encourage the natural talents of our students."
