Sampson Hosts Forum On Foreclosure Dilemma
Sampson had called the forum be-cause of the many questions he had encountered from his constituents, as well as others, recently. According to late published reports, foreclosures on houses in just the Canarsie area this year are up at least 50 percent above those of a year ago. Statistics have also shown that foreclosures statewide are up 51 percent. A report on New York 1 last week noted that the neighborhoods most at risk are Jamaica, Bellerose and Rosedale in Queens and Canarsie-Flatlands in Brooklyn. Addressing the dilemma, Sampson, along with Maisel, said they had encountered some families that bought a house - a mere six months ago - and their mortgage had already been raised to a price that they found they would probably not be able to meet on a monthly basis. To help those who attended the forum find a way out of their dilemma, Sampson introduced Steve Kirchgrader of the New York State Department of Banking and Jack Buello of the State Department to tell them of their rights and what pitfalls to look for in the future, should they have more problems. "There are some of you who are behind in your mortgage payments and are facing foreclosure proceedings from your lenders," said Sampson. "Well, we're here to tell you to be careful of scam artists and fly-by-night companies that prey on people just like you with offers of assistance, when they are really in it to profit from your difficult situation." He said one of the first tasks that should be undertaken would be to talk to your primary lender. "You never know," he said, "when they'll gladly sit down and work out some other method of payment more equitable to you both." Once again, though, he stressed that they should be careful and issued a brochure with phone numbers of various agencies that could be of assistance. There will be another forum regarding foreclosures on Monday, December 10 at 7 p.m. at the Hebrew Educational Society, 9502 Seaview Avenue. It will be hosted by City Councilman Lew Fidler, working with Kings County District Attorney Charles Hynes, Assemblyman Maisel and Assembly-woman Helene Weinstein.
