RN Offers "Superbug" Prevention Tips At Local Civic Meeting
"You're out there shopping, using public facilities and you don't think about cleaning your hands every few minutes," she said. She also noted that more people are at risk for ailments in the winter months and should take extra precautions to stay germ free. "Working in a hospital, I've witnessed people incorrectly washing their hands and women in particular do this all the time - they run a few fingers under the water and they think that's good enough - it's not," she said. "There's a simple way to remember how to properly wash your hands. Recite 'Happy Birthday' to yourself twice while soaping up. That's long enough to do the job. And after you've dried your hands when leaving a public bathroom, use a paper towel to open the door." Community Council president John Salogub said the presentation was also meant to educate adults so they could pass the information to children in the aftermath of the superbug scare after the antibiotic resistant staph infection took the life of a local middle school student in October. "One community activist we want to thank is Informed Voices president Wanda Ihrig," Salogub said. "She brought the issue to our attention before it affected us. We're glad that the subject is out of the spotlight - but hopefully everyone can be more watchful now that they know something as simple as proper hand washing helps." Following the presentation, Bolus distributed pocket-sized hand sanitizer bottles, which she encouraged the use of every hour while on the go.
